Iran Deploys Homemade Missiles in Desert Shows of Strength


TEHERAN Iran launched the special air defense exercise Modafe’an-e Aseman-e Velayat (Defenders of the Sky Velayat) starting Tuesday (12/10/2021). The maneuver for this show of force was carried out by deploying homemade missiles in the central desert.

The military exercise began with the deployment of homemade missiles and the deployment of radar. These maneuvers also include reconnaissance operations, electronic warfare, communications system operations, and visual surveillance network operations.

Brigadier General Qader Rahimzadeh, Commander of Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base, said in the first stage air defense exercises, the deployment of defense systems with quick reaction of operational forces in accordance with the principles of passive defense to deceive the enemy was done.

“At this stage of the exercise, reconnaissance flights and identification of the Army and IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps) manned and unmanned aircraft were carried out,” he was quoted as saying. Tehran Times, Wednesday (13/10/2021).

According to him, protecting the Islamic Republic’s air borders and comprehensive protection of the country’s sensitive and vital centers is one of the objectives of the exercise.

Pointing to the use of domestic air defense systems in the exercise, the commander of the air defense base said the deployment command and control system, Meraj radar system, Fatah-2 radar, tactical and reconnaissance intelligence systems, electro-optical systems and electronic warfare systems were used in the exercise.

“In the joint special air defense exercise, all detection, reconnaissance, interception and combat systems used by the army and air defense units of the IRGC were manufactured by committed Iranian specialists and youth in the armed forces and the country’s defense industry,” General Rahimzadeh said.

He said the exercise’s slogan was “defense authorities, safe skies”. According to him, the establishment of a secure air defense layer to protect Iran’s air borders as well as comprehensive defense of the country’s critical centers are among the objectives of the military exercise.

Iran has made major breakthroughs in designing and building advanced weapons. For example, the air defense missile system, named Bavar 373, is believed to rival the Russian-made S-300. The progress of the defense industry can be a catalyst for the progress of other industries in the country.
