Chennai: South African Chris Morris has overtaken Australian Glenn Maxwell in the star auction ahead of the 14th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rajasthan Royals have acquired Chris Morris for the highest bid of Rs 16.25 crore in a thrilling star auction. Rajasthan acquired Morris in a close auction with the Punjab Kings. With this, Morris surpassed the record of Australian Pat Cummins, who was acquired by Kolkata for Rs 15.50 crore last season. Morris is a team released by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Mumbai star Shivam Dubey is the first Indian millionaire to star in this year’s star auction. Dubai released by RCB. Rajasthan Royals acquired the company for Rs 4.40 crore.

Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore acquired Maxwell, which was released by the Punjab Kings ahead of the star auction, for Rs 14.25 crore. Bangalore have acquired Maxwell after a close auction with the Chennai Super Kings. Last season, Punjab Kings acquired Maxwell for Rs 10.75 crore. Chennai have acquired English all-rounder Moin Ali for Rs 7 crore. Kolkata have signed Shakib Al Hasan for Rs 3.20 crore and Delhi Capital for Rs 2.2 crore for Steve Smith. However, English players Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Indian batsman Karun Nair were not bought in the first round.

A total of 292 people, including 164 Indian players, are participating in the mini auction. A maximum of 61 players will be selected in 8 teams. The teams will have 22 players from foreign players. Prior to the star auction, the eight teams retained 139 players. 57 stars were released. The Punjab Kings are the focus of the Indian Premier League star auction in Chennai. The Kings are focusing on the BCCI’s proposal to spend 75 per cent of the total bid amount (Rs 85 crore) allotted to the teams. With a huge budget of Rs 53.2 crore, the Kings will have to spend Rs 31.7 crore for 9 players.
