IPhone Shortcuts and More Functions for Mac

Apple released macOS 12 Monterey. The OS update is available for download via the integrated software update and can alternatively be obtained as a multi GByte installer from the Mac App Store.

The new version can no longer be installed on certain Macs, including the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro made in 2013 and 2014, as well as the 2014 iMac and 12″ MacBook from 2015. Macs with Intel processors also lack some new features.

With macOS 12, Apple brings its operating system on par and adds important functionality already introduced with iOS and iPadOS 15, including Live Text to recognize text in images.

In addition, the familiar “Shortcut” automation tool on iPhone and iPad is now available on Mac computers – along with a plethora of actions and commands. Many Automator workflows should be importable. On a Mac, Shortcuts can also run AppleScript, JavaScript for automation, and shell scripts.

Also new in macOS is focus mode for granular notification control, support for iPad quick notes, and advanced functionality for shared notes, including activity history. Also new is support for iCloud add-ons like private pages and spam email addresses — as well as power-saving modes for MacBooks. macOS 12 turns your Mac into an AirPlay monitor and speaker. Safari 15 is an integral part of macOS Monterey, and its redesign has largely failed — by default, the browser now looks the same as before, but includes new functionality like tab groups.

As on the iPhone and iPad, Apple expanded its FaceTime video conferencing tool and now allows the creation of links that can be used, for the first time, to participate in browser video calls on other platforms. With SharePlay, you can also share screens and watch content together during video conferencing. The SharePlay functionality isn’t ready on macOS yet, but it will only follow in the coming weeks. SharePlay is integrated into iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1, which were released Monday night.

With Universal Control (“Seamless Control”) there is another central function missing today: it allows controlling your Mac and iPad via the same input device — including support for drag and drop between devices. The work must also be submitted in the fall.

[Update 25.10.2021 19:55 Uhr] macOS Monterey ships live in version 12.0.1. The update is good 12 GB on the MacBook Air M1.
