iPhone 13 will use Samsung’s 120Hz AMOLED screen

Jakarta, Selular.ID – Samsung will be the exclusive supplier of LTPO AMOLED displays for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro screens with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Not only that, but Samsung Electro-Mechanics will supply a rigid flexible printed circuit board (RFPCB).

According to a new report that appears, Samsung Display will supply a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) screen to Apple for its iPhone 13 offering. It should be noted that iPhones may not see a 120Hz refresh panel or higher without using LTPO technology. Of course, there is a reason behind it.

For those unaware, the LTPO features a power-efficient rear area which means higher refresh rates can be achieved without major costs to battery life.

With the LTPO panel, Apple can provide a high refresh rate to the iPhone while not worrying about battery life. As such, Samsung appears to be the one supplying the panels. In fact, the report claims that the chaebols will be Appel’s exclusive supplier for these panels.

In addition, Apple will also rely on Samsung for other important parts. We’re looking at Rigid Flexible Printed Circuit Board or RFPCB. For those who are not aware, RFPCB is the part that connects the OLED panel to the mainboard. RFPCB will be an important component for connecting LTPO panels. Of course, that will be supplied by Samsung Electro-Mechanics.

The new report is surprising given that Apple is doing its best to reduce its reliance on Samsung. To give you perspective, Apple is sourcing around 169 million OLED panels in 2021 alone. Of these, Samsung will send 110 million units to the company.

LTPO was developed by Apple and was first used on the Watch Series 4 which can compress the screen up to 1 Hz to save battery.

Meanwhile the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra is the first phone to use an LTPO panel and rumors have it that the upcoming S21 series will use the technology as well.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics had considered quitting the RFPCB business last year, having not made a profit in recent years. The last product that the board supplied for was the iPhone 12. And it seems that an exit is still possible after the iPhone 13 generation.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the iPhone 13. In fact, a few days ago, a rendering of the device appeared on the web. According to the new renders, the next generation iPhone appears to follow the same design ideology but with minor differences.
