iPhone 13 & iPhone 12 Step aside, this is the world’s best-selling cellphone

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The world’s best-selling phone for 2021 is occupied by Samsung. According to market research company Omdia, the device that received the title did not come from the flagship series, but the Samsung Galaxy A12 which was categorized as an entry-level phone.

Since the Samsung Galaxy A12 was first released in the fourth quarter of 2020, quarterly shipments in 2021 have surpassed 10 million units.

On an annual basis, Samsung recorded a total of 51.8 million units in 2021.

The Galaxy A21 is Samsung’s first model to surpass 50 million shipments in a year. The phone also ranks first in terms of shipments among more than 1,000 smartphone models shipped worldwide.

Omdia Senior Research Manager Jusy Hong said that although the average selling price of the iPhone was five times higher.

“Galaxy A12 is the most efficient model from Samsung with shipments of more than 50 million units per year,” Hong said, quoted from the official Omdia website, Friday (25/3/2022).

While in second place, there is Apple through the iPhone 12 which gets 41.7 million shipments in 2021.

Then in the third to fourth, Apple is back with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 11, respectively, with 34.9 million shipments and 33.6 million units, respectively.

The iPhone 13 released by Apple in 2021 is the second cheapest model after the iPhone 13 mini. The lowest price starts from the 128GB variant, at a price of US$829 or around Rp. 11.9 million, the same price as the 64GB iPhone 12 released the previous year.

Interestingly, the average selling price of the entire iPhone 13 series has increased compared to the previous year because it offers a larger storage capacity, which is 128 GB from 64 GB. Despite the rising selling price, shipments of the iPhone 13 were recorded at 34.9 million units, an increase of more than 100,000 units from the previous year’s iPhone 12, which was around 23.3 million units.

The model that occupies the fifth position is the Redmi 9A from Xiaomi. Xiaomi shipped a total of 26.8 million units at an average selling price of $78 per year.

Moving on to the next position, the iPhone again took the 6th through 9th positions, and shipments of the Pro model increased significantly.

While the average selling price of the Pro model far exceeds $1,000, shipments far exceed 20 million units. Apple’s total annual shipments last year recorded 234.5 million units, 39% of which were models with an average selling price of over $1,000. This is the highest percentage in Apple’s history.

“Apple’s dominance in the premium market is getting stronger, along with the increasing consumer demand for premium smartphones along with the easing of the pandemic situation,” said Hong.

The last place in the top 10 is taken by the Samsung Galaxy A02. Where as many as 18.3 million units were shipped last year. This is the second cheapest model after the Xiaomi Redmi 9A in the top 10 best selling phones.

Overall, Apple included a total of seven models, Samsung took the position of 2 models and Xiaomi one model.
