‘iPhone 12 drains 20 percent faster with 5G use’ | NOW

The battery of the iPhone 12 would drain 20 percent faster when using 5G internet. This is evident from tests by Tom’s Guide.

During the test, a new website was visited every thirty seconds on an iPhone 12 and 12 Pro until the battery was empty. In one test round this was done on 4G, while in the second the faster 5G internet was used.

When using 4G, the iPhone 12 lasted 10 hours and 23 minutes, with a battery time of 11 hours and 24 minutes on the iPhone 12 Pro.

On the 5G network, that time was shorter, 8 hours and 25 minutes and 9 hours and 6 minutes on the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, respectively.

‘Android competitors more economical on 5G’

According to the testers, the iPhones do worse on 5G than Android devices in the same price segment.

In iPhones, Apple has added a ‘smart data’ mode, which ensures that the 5G network is not continuously loaded. The phone would only use the higher speed for data-intensive operations such as downloading videos. For simple things such as reading emails or loading sites, iPhones are still on 4G.
