IPhone 12 could be delivered without charger or headphones

Those planning to buy the Apple iPhone 12 when it is scheduled to launch in the fall may find that two familiar accessories are missing from the box: a charger and Apple’s wired headphones. That’s what analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities says, who wrote in a new note that the AC adapter and EarPods may not come with the next Apple iPhone. Ming-Chi Kuo’s rating was reported by websites Apple 9to5Mac, MacRumors, and Apple Insider Sunday June 28, 2020.

Apple would give up these accessories to keep the price of its next flagship iPhone at roughly the same level as that of the iPhone 11 range. The iPhone 12 should be the first Apple smartphone to be compatible with 5G, and Ming- Chi Kuo predicts that putting the charger and headphones aside could help offset some of the additional costs that result from adding 5G.

This measure could also make the packaging of the iPhone more ecological, especially since durability has become a more important factor in the way the tech company designs and ships its products.

Apple would release a new 20W charger that will be sold separately as an accessory, says Ming-Chi Kuo. This charger would be more efficient than the 5 and 18 W adapters currently sold with Apple iPhones. The articles do not mention whether Ming-Chi Kuo expects the Lightning cable to be included.

Apple did not immediately respond to Business Insider US’s request for comment.

A choice that could cause some controversy

It is not the first time that articles have suggested that the next Apple iPhone will not come with wired headphones in the box. Ming-Chi Kuo had done a similar prediction last May, but he didn’t mention at the time that Apple was also phasing out the AC adapter.

If Apple decides not to include a charger or wired headphones with the iPhone 12, this could cause some controversy. Apple’s decision to remove the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 was met with skepticism because some technical journalists criticized this choice at the time.

We can ask the question for the charger and wired headphones. Long time iPhone users probably have several pairs of headphones and plenty of chargers at home. It is therefore logical that Apple does not want to raise the overall price of the new iPhone by including accessories that many people already have.

But it could also fuel criticism that Apple is doing on-site on the range of accessories. A 2018 Reddit discussion thread, for example, was filled with customer complaints about Apple’s power cables and storage options.

Apple also plans to completely eliminate the charging port by developing a fully wireless iPhone which could be launched in 2021, reported Ming-Chi Kuo in a previous December note. Reducing the packaging of the iPhone by excluding accessories that depend on the Lightning port could be a first step in this direction.

Ming-Chi Kuo is known for his generally accurate predictions on Apple products. For example, in early 2020, he correctly predicted thatApple to launch new iPad Pro this year with 3D augmented reality sensor. However, he was mistaken in saying that the new iPad Pro would be equipped with a triple camera. The latest Apple Pro tablet is equipped with two cameras and a Lidar sensor for more precise monitoring of the user’s environment for use in augmented reality applications.

The analyst also rightly said that Apple would come out MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with the new Apple keyboard in the first half of this year.

In addition to 5G, the Apple iPhone 12 should have a new design that resembles the aesthetics of the iPad Pro, a Lidar sensor like that of the iPad Pro and a new option for reduced size.
