One of the features of the iPhone 12 series is the new Ceramic Shield, developed by Corning using nano-ceramic crystals. Apple claims it has four times better drop resistance. The company claims it is the toughest glass used in smartphones. Following the first reviews, tech bloggers immediately began to verify these claims.
One of the first to test the strength of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro was the owner of the popular YouTube channel EverythingApplePro. When dropped from the waist level on different sides of the case and hitting the cement floor, both devices only slightly scratched, but nothing critical happened. A similar result was obtained when dropped from head level, but the iPhone 12 Pro showed a few damaged pixels.
After that, the blogger began to throw smartphones from a height of about three meters. The stock iPhone 12 had no obvious damage, but upon inspection it turned out that the camera had stopped working. The more expensive iPhone 12 Pro survived the fall without any problems. After that, both smartphones were thrown down from a 3-meter-high back cover – which in both cases resulted in broken glass. In this case, the front glass remained intact. It wasn’t until the iPhone 12 Pro dropped the screen down that the ceramic glass cracked, although the iPhone 12 passed this test as well. MobileReviewsEh decided to put the new iPhone 12 to the test in a completely different way. He used a special device to tap the screen. The ceramic safety glass withstood an applied force of 442 Newtons before cracking. For comparison: last year’s iPhone 11 withstood 352 Newtons.
Interestingly, the glass on the iPhone 12 is not only tougher than the last generation, but also less vulnerable to scratches. If on the iPhone 11, like on the vast majority of other modern smartphones, small scratches appear when using materials with the sixth level of the Mohs hardness scale, then in the case of the new iPhone 12, visible marks appear only at the seventh level.
