With iOS 15, many innovations came to the iPhone. For example, you can now blur the background in Facetime and hide the private environment during video conferences.

A not completely tidy closet, children in the background – in short: your own private four walls, which actually have nothing to do with the world of work. In times of home office, that changed quickly. While you could easily hide the background with services such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom, this was unfortunately not possible with Facetime until now. The new iOS 15 (all innovations) now creates the possibility to blur the background in video meetings. But not all iPhones have the basic requirements. We show how to do it.
requirements
Not everyone who uses iOS 15 on their iPhone has this feature. Because your Apple mobile phone must have the “Portrait mode for videos” feature and at least the Apple A12 chip installed. This means: All models from the iPhone XR or iPhone SE 2 can use this feature.
How does it work?
To blur your background in Facetime, open the app on your iPhone. Then call a desired contact via Facetime and click on the “Effect Icon” which you can find on your own picture. Then activate portrait mode at the top left. Unfortunately, the degree of blurring cannot be adjusted.
Use portrait mode in other apps such as Whatsapp
You can also use portrait mode in apps such as Whatsapp or Instagram, for example. You cannot click directly on an icon within the respective app, but first open the control center. As soon as you start a video, the new setting “Video Effects” will now be displayed. Click on this and choose “Portrait”. The result is a blurred background.
