Apple is adding 217 new emoji characters to iOS 14.5 when it launches this spring.
200 of the new characters are new emojis representing couples with different skin tones.
Other new emojis include three smiley faces, two hearts, a woman with a beard, a bloodless syringe, and headphones that look like AirPods Max.
iOS 14.5 is shaping up to be one of the biggest software updates Apple has released in months. Not only will this force app developers to comply with its new application tracking transparency rules, but it will also introduce several highly anticipated features, such as the ability to use an Apple Watch to unlock an iPhone while wearing a facial mask. But in addition to all the new features and privacy considerations, iOS 14.5 also adds new emojis.
According to Emojipedia, Apple added 217 new emoji characters in the latest beta of iOS 14.5. A vast majority of the characters – 200, to be precise – are new emojis representing a wider range of couples with different skin tones so that more users can find themselves and their partners on the emoji keyboard. There are plenty of other fun additions too, as well as an updated emoji to sync with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beyond the new line of emojis for couples, Apple has added three smiley faces: the exhaling face, the face with spiral eyes, and the face in the clouds. Whether or not they’re meant to be part of a set, I can certainly think of a few use cases for these emojis at a glance, but I’m sure there will be plenty of smart alternatives:
Apple also included two new heart emoticons in the update: Heart on Fire and Mending Heart. Depending on what stage of the relationship you are in, these could definitely come in handy. Apple is also updating some existing emojis in iOS 14.5. The first is the syringe, which has no more blood flowing. As Emojipedia points out, this makes the emoji useful for talking about the COVID-19 vaccine, which millions of people around the world receive every day. This could very well be one of the biggest risers when it comes to underused emojis in 2021. Apple has also changed the headset emoji so that its design aligns with the AirPods Max. Apple previously tweaked the desktop, laptop, phone, and watch emojis to look more like Apple products, so it’s no surprise that headset emojis ended up following. the trend:
