The problem: With more and more providers, the range of charging stations is becoming increasingly confusing.

If you drive an electric car and are often on long European journeys, you can hardly avoid Ionity. This charging station consortium of the big car manufacturers Audi, BMW, Ford, Mercedes, Porsche and VW has put into operation over 200 fast-charging stations along the main traffic axes with already more than 860 charging points in the past two years.
–
The highlight: Not only are the stations designed for extreme charging capacities of up to 350 kW (which, however, cannot yet be called up by an electric car; the new Porsche Taycan charges, for example, with up to 270 kW) – the charging process is a flat rate of CHF 8 (EU: 8 euros) cheap. So if you charge electricity for 300 kilometers, you only pay just over CHF 2.50 per 100 kilometers. Until now.
For comparison: with a gasoline engine, at a liter price of CHF 1.60, that would correspond to a car that swallows over 11 l / 100 km!

Mostly special conditions
Before panic breaks out among e-car drivers, let’s put it in perspective here. First, most manufacturers that offer an electric car offer special rates. To stay with the example of the Audi e-tron: At Audi there is the e-tron charging service card, for which long-distance drivers pay a basic fee of just under CHF 20 a month, but in the future for 37 centimes in the Ionity network / Recharge kWh of electricity – even abroad. Then only makes 35 francs for the full charge of the E-Tron.
–
Sure: At home, where practically e-car drivers charge in most cases – except on long journeys – it stays cheaper: Here you can get a full 95 kWh charge, depending on the provider and tariff, from around CHF 13.
–
Many cheaper than Ionity
In addition, electric car drivers can switch to numerous other providers. For example, anyone who owns the charging card or app from the Swiss company Swisscharge has access to a total of almost 49,000 charging stations for dozens of operators across Europe. And in the future these will sometimes be cheaper than Ionity: at Move the hour on the fast charger costs a good 19 francs, in the BMW charging network only around 17 francs. The largest public Swiss provider, evpass, can also be charged, which would also be cheaper at just under CHF 52 than at Ionity.
–
Conclusion: It is surprising that Ionity is already raising the prices for refueling many times before the electrical trend has really started. But demand and supply will determine the prices – Tesla is now also demanding money from its own superchargers. And maybe not just Ionity, but everyone should think about basically harmonizing their offers. Because we are still far away from the clear payment system for electric car drivers all over Europe.
