IOC member Wickenheiser criticizes adherence to appointment

The four-time Olympic hockey champion, Hayley Wickenheiser, was the first IOC member to express clear criticism of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) strict adherence to the Tokyo Summer Games. “The crisis is bigger than the Olympic Games itself,” wrote the 41-year-old Canadian on Twitter.

“I think that the IOC with such a conviction insists that it continues, is irresponsible and insensitive,” said Wickenheiser. The IOC reiterated on Tuesday that despite the coronavirus pandemic, the games will open in Tokyo, Japan, on July 24.

“The IOC remains fully committed to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,” the organization said after a conference call by the executive committee. “Since there are still more than four months until the games, no drastic decisions are necessary at the current time.” Speculations at the current time would be “counterproductive”.
