Inwood Apartment Burns Down in a Cable Fire: No Injuries Reported

“Everything in my apartment burned down…”

This is how Aurora Vásquez’s apartment, located in the 4996 Broadway building on 212th Street, in the Inwood sector, was left after it caught fire at around one-thirty on Friday morning.

“A cable line caught fire, and my niece’s room caught fire, ‘so’ she picked us up, we took the animals and went down,” Aurora said.

Vásquez, who is disabled, is thankful that her brother was able to help her and get her out on time.

“I ran out, as I could they helped me down,” added Aurora.

A video taken by Vásquez’s brother shows the building completely destroyed.

“As I understand it, I think it was an electronic fire, it started with electricity that burned in a room,” said Paúl Vásquez.

According to the authorities of the City Fire Department (FDNY) the units were assigned to the location at 3:30 am, where they were able to determine that the fire came from a multiple dwelling.

In another video, courtesy of the citizen app, the exterior of the building can be seen on fire as crews worked to control the fire.

“The apartment is a total loss, everything burned down,” added brother Vásquez.

The incident devastated two upper apartments in the building, but also caused damage to neighbors on the ground floor, such as Natanael Fernández.

“You can see directly where my room is, two floors above is where the fire happened, so already in my apartment there was a lot of smoke, a lot of water falling on all my clothes, on all sides, because the firefighters were already putting water everywhere, thank God no one died, everything is fine,” said Fernández.

The fire spread to the fourth and fifth floors, so firefighters escalated the response to a second alarm, using 25 units and 106 members and bringing the fire under control at about 6:50 a.m.

Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the causes of the fire are under investigation.
