Invited to the wall for help in the mood of “Straumēni” in E. Virza ‘s father’ s house Press release

July 16, 2020

The information was prepared by Aiga Priede, nature education work specialist of the Nature Protection Board.

On July 23, the Nature Protection Board (hereinafter – the Board) invites everyone interested to get involved in the haystack in the mood of “Straumēni”, which will take place in the vicinity of the writer’s Edvarts Virza’s father’s house “Billīte” in Ozolnieki region.

In the legendary work “Straumēni”, the well-known 20th century writer, poet and publicist Edvarts Virza intertwined his childhood memories with the desire to pass on to future generations the virtues and values of the past so that they serve as the basis of a harmonious life. Today, thanks to the initiative of E.Virza’s granddaughter, writer Anna Žīgure, everyone has the opportunity to be in the place where “Straumēni” is written and to feel the everyday life of a country house, where there is eternal order and inner peace.

After the clean-up, the participants, accompanied by an expert, will be able to walk around the meadow and learn about the surrounding natural values and the role of people in their preservation. Under the guidance of writer Anna Žīgure and her daughter Diana Jances, everyone will have the opportunity to take part in a literary walk at the Edvarts Virza and Elza Stērste memorial house “Billīte”. There will also be an open-air meal in the yard of “Billīši” and at the end also songs and games together with a folklore group.

Cooperation with the writer Anna Žīguri was established for the Board during the Nature Census, when experts found a biologically valuable grassland in one of the meadows owned by “Billīši”, about which the writer was also informed. After receiving the information, Anna Žīgure turned to the Office to find out more about the found values and the idea of organizing a haystack arose.

As a result of skilful management, there is a great diversity of species in the meadow, especially protected plants and insects. This year, part of the meadow will be cleared of bushes and the cut grass will be removed from it during the clean-up. The collection of the cut grass here can only be done by hand, as it is not possible to access it with the machine. That is why the help of volunteers is needed, whose work will contribute to the preservation of biologically valuable grassland and protected plants.

In order to comply with epidemiological precautionary measures, the number of participants is limited and prior registration is mandatory. Start of work at 10.00. When applying, you should be ready to spend about 2 hours in physically active work. Drinking water will be available for the participants during the haystack, but please bring your own bottle or cup to pour water into, as well as take care of protection against insects and sunburn! According to the theme, we invite both ladies and gentlemen to dress in white or light colored clothes. Application for participation in the event until July 21: phone 29802428 (Aiga).
