Inti y Vicente have opened the year with the premiere of “Usa”, a song that promises to become a hit. This song, which was composed by themselves and Alejandro León, has a video clip that has already achieved more than 300,000 views within weeks of its release.
In 2020, the duo released “Post Pa ‘Ti / Bien Chill”, her first single as part of Universal Music. In an interview with La República, the singers tell about their experience working with this international label.
In addition, both reveal what they are inspired by to create their own songs and how they continue to build their musical career in the context of the pandemic.
-You have recently released your new single this year “Usa”, tell us about it.
Inti: This year it started with a super crazy video. Well, this song “Usa” talks about the feeling of being accompanied but still feeling alone. It revolves around that.
-What were you inspired by for the lyrics of this song?
Vicente: I think we have been inspired by feelings of ours, of many people because it is a subject that many people do not talk about. For us it is important to communicate it so that they not only think that it happens to one person and not to another, but to ourselves as well.
Inti: It is normal to be alone, this song, as we did in Mexico (we had gone to the Spotify Awards), we were with our producer in an apartment and we felt the same feeling of having been at the Spotify Awards, being the only Peruvians and feeling like somehow alone having been so surrounded. I think everything was added to make this song flow.
-How has the public’s response to this new song been?
Inti: Incredible, the video is at 300,000 views, I think the song is uploading more on Spotify. The truth is that we are super happy.
-You joined Universal Music, how did you get the opportunity to sign a contract with the label?
Inti: It has been something magical for us and also the result of a lot of work. We have been walking with music for eight years, and that Universal has arrived, that they have called us to be part of the family, all this is for us the demonstration that it is worth fighting a lot for dreams and having all the dedication .
-How is the experience of working with Universal Music?
Vicente: It really is incredible.
Inti: We as independents spent all our resources, I think we couldn’t have done anything else, we did everything we could: video clips, share the songs and contests with whoever we could … and when the resources as independents run out and a label arrives to empower you, is the best.
-You closed 2020 with the release of the song “Llamarte otra vez” in collaboration with Lasso, an artist who was nominated for a Latin Grammy.
Vicente: It was an incredible experience. Lasso is an artist that we admire a lot, he liked the song a lot because we sent him the version that was with guitar. He liked it and got on.
Inti: The truth is that we seek this collaboration. The first song as Vicente says, it was just guitar and he loved the song (Lasso). No more than two days passed and he had already sent us his verse and told us that it did not come out of his head. For the first time we had the idea of not doing a remix, but a second part. Then, at that moment “Llamarte” and “Llamarte otra vez” were created, two video clips that continue.
-In September 2020 they released their song “Puesto pa ‘ti / bien chill” …
Inti: Super, it was a youthful issue, like having a good “chill” plan, listening to Bob Marley and knowing that there are no parties due to the pandemic then relaxed.
Vicente: It has a very funny video.
-How difficult is it to build your musical career during the pandemic?
Inti: I think we don’t allow it to limit us psychologically, we don’t allow it to slow us down for more than a week. We had seven days to think because we did not know what to do, and the next we recorded the video clip of “It should not happen”, which was a song that we recorded, a while ago, and the truth is that thanks to deciding that we were not going to stop in the pandemic , the label arrived.
-Was any project truncated due to the pandemic?
Vicente: Shows and a video.
Inti: Yes, we had a video clip, it was cut but I did a stop motion. I ended up doing the whole video clip in stop motion.
-You have been in the artistic environment for eight years, how did you decide to dedicate yourself to music?
Vicente: I think it is a dream that we have had since before we met. Personally, I really like music and Inti the same. We are at a point where knowing each other added a lot.
Inti: We complement each other and in fact, as I was telling you, everything came out very natural. We just started and finished the first year of school, singing at kermeses in other schools and they asked us what their names were and we said ‘Inti and vicente’ and that’s how it remained.
-You compose your own songs, do you include part of your experience for your creations?
Inti: Honesty is always the most important thing. When we compose we always try that what we say is not because it sounds sticky, but because it comes from an honest place. So, if we combine our experiences … as we are two people, each one in mind has an idea when writing a song. We combine my idea, Vicente’s, and it comes out.
-Have you thought about trying other genres?
Inti: Yes, we have a salsa version of a song with Son temptation that we released a couple of years ago, it was an experiment, it was really fun.
Vicente: I believe that what is not lost is our essence as Inti and Vicente, that is what keeps us going. Music may vary.
-Do you feel there is support from the Peruvian music industry?
Inti: I think that it is being created, while we make better content, more quality, we are also opening the eyes of companies here and they are seeing that it is worth supporting the material that is made here. I think the artists are putting the batteries in an incredible way.
-Which artists would you like to collaborate with?
Inti: We like many artists here, what we always think is that the song is what matters, whatever the artist. If you are an artist who has a follower and comes and says, ‘Look, I have this song and it’s an incredible song,’ well we collaborated on one. Music rules.
-What are your goals? What are you projecting yourself into as a musical duo?
Inti: We have talked about it several times and our great goal is to represent Peru, have the support and trust of our country, before anyone else. For us that is the ultimate inspiration. Having the support of our nation is more than enough, go somewhere else and say: ‘We come with Peru next door’, it is not that we are from Peru, but that we all come here.
-Have you tried virtual concerts?
Vicente: We had a tour of Colombia in 2020 and it really went quite well.
Inti: It’s super crazy, we had never sung at lives and it was for the schools in Bogotá, with a radio station from there that gave us super cool support. We were for more than 10 schools, the truth is that we had a great time. But it’s still weird, not looking people in the eye, it’s weird. Also on the internet, sometimes we are singing and suddenly everything is paralyzed, and you do not know if it was you or them.
-How do you not lose closeness with your followers despite this situation?
Inti: Make material. Our fans follow us because we make music. The more music we can give them, it is the best way to communicate and tell them what we feel. Anyway, we are always on social networks doing activities with fans.
-What would you say to young people who want to make their way on this musical path?
Vicente: Don’t give up, keep fighting for your dreams and be patient because nothing comes from one day to the next.
Inti: This is an endurance race, you have to create and keep creating.
