The Swiss cinemas will open again soon – and have to rethink radically, as the film expert Thierry Spicher says. In the future, they should also use virtual screens.

“The cinema curates the program and determines when the films are shown,” says Thierry Spicher.

Mr. Spicher, we are currently experiencing a huge digital transformationn. When the cinemas reopen, will they continue with their old business model?
There are many people right now who let fatalism paralyze them. You remain passive and unimaginative. I’ve heard from movie theater operators who hope that the halls will be closed for as long as possible, at least until September. Because now opening just before summer means it won’t have any films or visitors.

Let’s assume that we can go to the cinema again in April. Will the visitors come back then?
Some sure. But there was a visitor even before the pandemickrise, because the ticket prices were too high, the evaluation shorter and shorter wurde, the program times more and more those of a theater glichen and there were more and more other cultural offers. We have already lost some of the young visitors. Many 35 to 40-year-olds also lack the time for the cinema, they have had children and have purchasing power and a second home. They may have gone to the cinema a lot in the past, but now they say if they feel like watching a movie, it rains or they can’t find a parking space.
