Interest in vaccinations is falling sharply. There will be no collective immunity

It takes ten percent of the Czech population to vaccinate against covid-19 in September, while one day was enough in July. In the last five days, the vaccination rate of the population has increased by only two tenths of a percent. It follows from vaccination datapublished by the Ministry of Health.

However, according to the molecular immunologist Václav Hořejší from the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, it is not possible to count on the so-called collective type of coronavirus with the so-called collective immunity. “The textbook term collective or herd immunity means that once 80 percent of the population is vaccinated, those vaccinated can no longer be infected and continue to spread the virus. And the remaining 20 percent is thus indirectly protected because the virus does not have enough opportunities, “he said.

Experts expected a similar effect with coronavirus vaccination. “Unfortunately, the delta variant came, which is such that it infects even those vaccinated. It will not cause them a serious course, in the vast majority they will not even notice it. But they are infected on the nasal mucosa and can spread the virus to their surroundings, “he said.

According to him, classic collective immunity cannot be achieved, but he estimates that up to 90 percent of those vaccinated together with people who have already contracted the infection. “That’s why the current numbers of hospitalized and ICU people are so good,” he added. To date, the hospital has 164 tested positive, 27 of them in serious condition and the number has not changed significantly in the last two weeks.

On the profile of the information campaign Let’s make a dot behind coronavirus on Facebook, she appeared on Wednesday call to vaccinate nine percent of the population so that children in schools do not have to wear veils. These are currently compulsory only outside the classroom, for example in the common areas of the school.

However, interest in vaccinations is declining. While more than 100,000 doses were vaccinated daily in the first half of July, it was below 10,000 doses in the last two days. It was on Wednesday vaccination about 217,000 pending applicants are registered, but it may also be the third benefit to which almost 40,000 people are already entitled. On the other hand, in a large part of vaccination centers, people do not have to report in advance.
