The Connect Europe kicked off the Final 8 format on Monday. Five days after leaving Getafe (2-0, Inter Milan this time dismissed Bayer Leverkusen at the Esprit arena in Düsseldorf. Antonio Conte’s players are now awaiting their opponents for the semi-final will be either Shakhtar Donetsk or FC Bale who will play their quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Inter Milan quickly took the advantage (15th) thanks to Barella from an outside at the entrance to the area. Already involved indirectly on the first goal, Romelu Lukaku doubled the bet a few minutes later (20th), well found by Young in the box. Back to goal, the Belgian made use of his power to slide the ball against Hradecky.
Two penalties refused by the VAR
Not defeated, Bayer Leverkusen reduced the score (24th) a few moments after a miss from Lukaku thanks to Havertz. By relying on Volland in defense, the young German found himself alone in the box and only had to strike power to deceive Handanovic. Inter Milan thought they could take the lead (28th) but the referee, using the VAR, cleared himself to withdraw the penalty initially whistled on a Sinkgraven ball hit with the shoulder.
Despite some attempts, Bayer Leverkusen failed to come back afterwards. At the end of the game (90 + 1e), the referee once again consulted the VAR for a supposed fault of the Germans in the box. But despite the two penalties refused, the Nerazzurri have snatched their ticket for the semi-final they will play next Monday.
