Intel Iris Xe Max graphics barely beat the NVIDIA GeForce MX330 in the last test

The Iris Xe Max (DG1) discrete mobile GPU already supplied to OEMs has been tested on Geekbench 5. According to these preliminary benchmark results (posted by whistleblower @Tum_Apisak), GPU performance is somewhere on par with AMD’s Radeon RX 550.

Intel has been out of the discrete graphics market for quite some time now, and the Irix Xe Max marks the company’s return to the sector after more than 20 years. The GPU is equipped with 96 Compute Units (EU), which include 768 shader cores. The original Iris Xe Max test platform had a GPU with 3GB of GDDR6 memory. By the way, the same GPU lit up in a new laptop ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 with 4 GB of LPDDR4X memory. Apparently, Iris Xe Max can work with both GDDR6 and LPDDR4X.

Both versions of the Iris Xe Max feature a maximum GPU frequency of 1.5 GHz. The base and Boost frequencies are still unknown. In the previous case, the Iris Xe Max was clocked up to 1.55GHz, but this could simply be the result of manual overclocking. Geekbench 5 is not a universal test for graphics, but for now, that’s all there is. In any case, the results of Iris Xe Max should be approached with reservations before full-fledged market entry: the final product may perform better or worse.

Intel did not seek to compete in the area of ​​maximum performance with the Iris Xe Max. Therefore, in general, it is not surprising that the Iris Xe Max accelerator received 11,885 points in Geekbench 5 OpenCL and is only 6.5% higher than the NVIDIA GeForce MX330 2 GB GDDR5 with its 11,162 points. At the same time, the GeForce MX350 2 GB GDDR5 shows performance 16.4% higher than Intel Xe Max – 13 832 points. The AMD Radeon RX 550X two years ago outperformed the Iris Xe Max by 6% with 12,598 points.

Intel is building a mobile ecosystem with its Tiger Lake chips, and this is where the real value of the Iris Xe Max lies. Alone, the Iris Xe Max will probably not beat the competition. However, when working in conjunction with the integrated graphics of Tiger Lake, the superiority can already be much more noticeable. The Acer Swift 3X laptop featuring 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors and Iris Xe Max graphics is slated to debut in December. Thus, very soon we will see what the Iris Xe Max is really capable of.
