Intel Alder Lake-S desktop processors get LGA1700 performance

The next two generations of Intel desktop processors will be called Comet Lake-S and Roсket Lake-S, and as it turned out earlier this month, sometime later they will be replaced by Alder Lake-S processors. Now, new details about these processors have become known, and in particular that they will use a completely new socket.

At the moment, it is reliably known that the Comet Lake-S processors, as well as their mobile counterparts Comet Lake-U and Comet Lake-Y that have already been released, will be manufactured using the 14-nm process technology and will become another embodiment of the Skylake microarchitecture. Then, by the end of this or at the beginning of next year, Intel will release the Roсket Lake-S chips, which will also be performed according to the 14-nm process technology, but according to rumors, they can become carriers of the new Willow Cove microarchitecture.

And now it is reported that their followers, Alder Lake-S, will be the first Intel desktop processors to be executed in a more advanced process technology than the 14nm (with some advantages). At the moment, it is not specified whether it will be the notorious 10 nm, or more advanced 7 nm. It is also unknown how much the performance of such processors will improve, although you can clearly count on a tangible increase both due to the new architecture and the new process technology. But in any case, Alder Lake-S will be a big step for Intel in the desktop segment.

Together with the change in the technical process, the execution will also change. It is expected that the Alder Lake-S processors will be made in the new LGA1700 case with dimensions of 45 × 37.5 mm. The source suggests that a significant increase in the number of contacts is supported by new high-speed interfaces, in particular PCIe 4.0 or even PCIe 5.0, as well as DDR5 SDRAM. Memory, by the way, can receive more than two channels for connection. But the latter is nothing more than our assumptions.
