“Insulting Video” – The New South Tyrolean Daily Newspaper

Ulrike Oberhammer

The women’s rights activist Ulrike Oberhammer said to Schützen: “Mander, it’s time to stop!”

Ulrike Oberhammer is outraged: “An exceptionally difficult year comes to an end with an insulting music video by the South Tyrolean Schützenbund.”

At the end of the year, the South Tyrolean Schützenbund published a German rap with a suitable music video in which women are insulted as “cheap whores” who are “just lying around at home” and thus associated with predominantly negative aspects, according to the President of the Equal Opportunities Advisory Board.

In the video, which produces a male cult, women are only decorative accessories, so the traditional gender hierarchies are maintained.

Ulrike Oberhammer continues:

“It is well known that women are often disrespectful in rap lyrics. The trivializing of sexist texts and videos must stop and can in no way be justified with ‘freedom of expression or artistic freedom’.

Through the video of the South Tyrolean riflemen, misogyny is made commonplace in text and images. This must be prevented. That is why there is a need for a sexism debate in music texts and videos in South Tyroleans too. And all the more so in a year that has demanded great sacrifices, especially from women.

In addition to work and the household, closed kindergartens and schools were a major challenge.

This video is like a slap in the face for the many women who work in systemically important professions and who are still fighting the coronavirus every day, which has changed our lives to a previously unimaginable degree. You kept the business going and do incredible things every day. So there can be no question of ‘sitting around’.

The publication of this video at the end of the year, which was also marked by numerous feminicides and increasing violence against women and just two days after a young woman Agitu Ideo Gudeta was cruelly murdered in the neighboring province, shows a lack of respect for women who are victims of violence their children, families and friends, and women in general.

If we want to fight violence against women effectively, it is high time to stop accepting violence against women.

The State Advisory Council for Equal Opportunities therefore calls on society to no longer tolerate violence against women in music texts and videos, not to hear these songs and not to spread them and / or post them on social media. Because violence against women concerns us all! “
