The Health and Youth Inspectorate (IGJ) is starting an investigation into the large number of deaths in the Rotterdam nursing home Leeuwenhoek, minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) announced on Thursday. In one department, more than half of elderly people with dementia are said to have died from the effects of the coronavirus, she said NRC outwards.
It would be at least fifteen deaths and the death toll is increasing day by day, according to the daily. People would also have been infected in other departments. Nursing home staff speak of “negligence”, which spokespersons in conversation with the newspaper firmly deny.
De Jonge now says he has received signals that the hygiene measures in the building were not in order. The IGJ will investigate whether negligence has contributed to the large number of deaths.
In conversation with NRC Seven members of staff spoke about a ban on face masks, which would cause confusion for the total of 72 residents. In the meantime, there would be too few protective equipment. In addition, the isolation process did not prevent stray, infected elderly people from coming into contact with healthy residents.
A quarter of the residents would still be infected, as would an equally large proportion of the staff. “But if they are tested positive and show no symptoms, they should still show up,” said an anonymous source in conversation with NRC.
