Kilmar Abrego Garcia, Detained by ICE, Moved to Pennsylvania Facility
Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been transferred from a Virginia detention center to the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, according to notifications sent to his lawyers Friday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Abrego garcia, 30, gained prominence during President Donald Trump’s administration after being wrongfully deported to El Salvador. The Trump administration alleged he was a member of the MS-13 gang,a claim he denies and was never charged with.
His attorneys have expressed concerns regarding conditions at moshannon, citing recent reports of “assaults, inadequate medical care, and insufficient food” in a federal court filing.
abrego Garcia was returned to the U.S. in June to face human smuggling charges, which his legal team has characterized as “preposterous and vindictive.”
The case highlights the complexities of deportation processes. U.S. protocol typically involves a multi-step process, including a “reasonable fear interview” to assess potential persecution or torture, followed by review by an immigration judge and the Board of immigration Appeals. Abrego Garcia retains the right to contest Board of Immigration Appeals decisions in federal court.
Notably, the Trump administration has been actively removing immigration judges, including those appointed by former President Joe Biden, as part of a broader immigration crackdown.
