While the cinemas are not allowed to open until July 1st, Innsbruck has a drive-in cinema on the Olympiaworld site. From May 29, two films will be shown there every day. The project is made possible by a cooperation between Olympiaworld and the Metropolkino.

The drive-in cinema is held every three summer months, says Olympiaworld managing director Matthias Schipflinger. In addition to the daily demonstrations, the technical infrastructure is also suitable for broadcasting cultural events such as concerts or cabarets.
Schipflinger rates the demand for a drive-in cinema as great: “With the drive-in cinema, we can use part of our event space sensibly and give back part of your leisure time to the Tyroleans in these difficult times.”
Between “Minions”, “Joker” and “Otto Neururer”
A daylight-compatible LED screen enables family-friendly films on the evening before, followed by prime-time blockbusters after dark, says Schipflinger. There is already a program preview for the cinema start on May 29th: “On the first day we will start with the Minions and Bohemian Rapsody, on Pentecost weekend further highlights will follow with Oscar-premiered films such as Joker or Parasite,” says Metropolitan Managing Director Mario Hueber: “We combine the charm of nostalgia with the latest technology.” There will also be themed evenings, for example with the film “Otto Neururer – Hopeful Darkness” on the 80th anniversary of the blessed pastor and victim of the Nazi regime.
No CoV risk in the car
A drive-in cinema is harmless from a health perspective, said Innsbruck Mayor Johannes Anzengruber, since contact with other visitors will be reduced to zero. The protection of the residents is also guaranteed by the transmission of the sound signal via the car radio. The idea for the drive-in cinema came up in discussions with Innsbruck Marketing, Tourismusverband and the city of Innsbruck. The Federal Government’s amendment to the Relaxation Ordinance, which comes into force on May 15, makes it possible to hold drive-in cinemas.
