Inji, the oldest orangutan in the world, was euthanized at the Oregon Zoo, USA

OREGON, KOMPAS.com – Orangutan oldest in the world, Inji, died at the age of 61 at Zoo Oregon, United States of America (US) on Saturday (10/1/2021).

This female orangutan from Sumatra, Indonesia has been sick in recent weeks. Inji seemed to struggle to move and leave the cage.

Since there was no sign of improvement, despite treatment for the pain, the vet decided that Inji should be euthanized or euthanized.

In a public statement announcing Inji’s death, zoo staff member Bob Lee said, “We know he can’t live forever, but it is very painful, and I know many visitors who are grieving with us.”

Inji is considered to have extraordinary abilities in his connections with visitors. “He inspired generations,” said Lee.

Regardless of his age that exceeds the expectations of life orangutan wild, which is more than 20 years, Inji still has a high curiosity when observing the visiting humans.

“Some of the volunteers, staff and guests deliberately carried wind toys or brightly colored items in their bags just to show Inji,” Lee said.

In 2012, Inji appeared in an article informing how zoos look after their animals which are old and ‘nearing’ the end of their lives.

The Oregon Zoo brought Inji in when he was about a year old on January 30, 1961, and he has remained there ever since. The day of Inji’s birth is unknown.

Inji was born in the wild and brought to the US through the then legal wildlife trade. In the place of origin of Inji, Sumatra, orangutans are threatened with extinction.

Zoo plans to honor Inji at the opening of new habitat in the Primate Forest for chimpanzees and orangutans scheduled for spring.
