The town of Tomelloso is the one that accumulates the highest mortality in all of Spain, with about 200 total deaths between March and April, according to local sources. There, one of the first outbreaks occurred among members of a Haro family who moved in late February to the municipality of La Rioja where there was already a high number of infections. But Alcázar de San Juan, where its mayor raised to 188 the total deaths (without being able to specify how many by Covid-19 ) between March and April and Pedro Muñoz, where sources from the municipality speak of more than 70 deaths in the same period in a population of just over 7,000 inhabitants.
Thousands of people commuted to Madrid every day to work and many students from the capital returned to their relatives’ homes.
Thousands of people went every day to work in Madrid (ground zero of the pandemic) from these municipalities before confinement was decreed. Many students from the capital returned to their families’ homes also just before entering an alarm state, as confirmed by sources in the affected municipalities. The social life of these towns, with very close homes, does not contribute either. Consistorial sources do not hide that it is being difficult for the population to respect distancing. In Ciudad Real capital alone, the Local Police have delivered more than 1,000 sanction proposals for breaching confinement.
The Page Government requested Phase 1
The president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, asked the Ministry of Health that all the provinces, including Ciudad Real with 8,205 infected according to the PCR tests carried out, go to phase 1 next Monday. Only Cuenca and Guadalajara, with 2,841 and 2,140 positives, have done so.
Ciudad Real had this Saturday 220 hospitalized by Covid, 90 and 75 of them in the Mancha Centro de Alcázar de San Juan hospitals and the General Hospital of the capital
The rest should not have met the “qualitative” requirements of the expert committee that advises the Government on the de-escalation and the essential ones published in the Official State Gazette: having 1.5 places in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 37 beds for acute patients for every 100,000 inhabitants. Ciudad Real had 220 hospitalized by Covid this Saturday, 90 and 75 of them in the Mancha Centro hospitals in Alcázar de San Juan and the General Hospital in Ciudad Real (HGCR), respectively, and 31 in the Tomelloso hospital. The rest are in Valdepeñas (16), Manzanares (6) and Puertollano (2).
The Ministry of Health did not specify to this medium, according to what was asked, how many ICU and ventilator stations do the hospitals of Alcázar de San Juan and Ciudad Real have that cover the most populated areas of the province or how many patients needed to be cared for intensive in each of them. He just reported that “31 patients needed a ventilator at the HGCR and 10 at the Mancha Centro Hospital this Friday.”
“The worst is over, but fear must not be lost”
The president of the Ciudad Real College of Physicians, José Molina, recalls that «the first moments of the virus were very hard. The situation has improved, of the three floors of the General Hospital that were reserved for patients with coronavirus , only one is left open, but you do not have to let your guard down. You should not lose your fear of the virus and I am concerned that people are doing it, “he said in a telephone conversation.
Five doctors have died from the virus in the province, three of them at the Mancha Centro Hospital in Alcázar de San Juan
Molina remembers the five doctors who have died in the province, three in the Mancha Centro Hospital in Alcázar de San Juan, including Sara Bravo, 28, a family doctor in the nearby municipality of Mota del Cuervo. The president of the doctors from Ciudad Real demands the regional government protection teams and seroprevalence tests: “We have breastfed and now that the situation has improved, it is necessary, the percentage of infected toilets has been brutal,” he says.
The specialist explains that “at the beginning we were faced with a totally new situation, we did not know the symptoms.” That, precisely, considers that it was one of the reasons for the massive contagion and the high number of deaths. «This province has an aging population, with previous pathologies that could be aggravated by the disease. Some of them went to primary care centers and were not transferred to hospitals because of their age, given the collapse of the worst days. In these health centers only those with a compatible clinic were tested for the virus. It is very possible that others returned home with him, although without symptoms, “he says.
From the Ministry of Health confirm that “the highest figures for hospitalization were in the final days of March and early April and since then we are in a constant decline in both the number of hospitalized in conventional beds, and critics.” This Saturday, the total number of discharges in the region amounted to 6,062 (1,945 in Ciudad Real) and there were 588 people hospitalized throughout the community, according to official data.
The virus is fattened with residences
As in other communities, the Covid-19 has been primed with the nursing homes of Castilla-La Mancha, which has more than 400 centers, 232 with a positive case, according to government sources.
Precisely in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real) is the first private residence that the regional government had to intervene due to its situation. At the Elder center, up to a quarter of the residents (more than 50 elderly) infected. It is still under the control of the Community Board.
The Ministry of Health has also provided health care from a doctor and a nurse in all the residences in the province distributed between the capital, Puertollano, Manzanares, Valdepeñas, Tomelloso and Alcázar de San Juan.
According to the latest information provided by the State Attorney General’s Office, there are three criminal investigations open to nursing homes in the province. Also two others to a hospital center and a social health services company for the care provided to the elderly.
Francisco José Núñez, president of the Association of Nursing Homes for the Elderly of Castilla-La Mancha (Artecam), explains that “PCR tests are already being carried out on the elderly and the situation is very controlled in almost the entire region.” The residences have been “sectorized”, he transfers. The elderly have been divided between those who are or have been infected and those who are not. For this, there have even been transfers from one residence to another. Most residents spend confinement in their rooms. Only those with better health are allowed to go out to common areas, leisure areas and gardens.
Núñez explains that his association and the regional government work closely and have held meetings in recent days to design the de-escalation plan for the residences, also to incorporate elderly people who are in hospitals or their homes. “Many older people are alone and in need of care, they demand to enter our centers.”
The central government, specifically Vice President Pablo Iglesias, has been fattened with its criticism of private homes for the elderly
It does not rule out that the residential associations unite at the national level to make a joint defense. “The central government, specifically Vice President Pablo Iglesias, has been fattened with its criticism of private homes for the elderly. We cannot allow it. When this pandemic broke out we were completely unprotected. At the beginning we did not have protection measures, our elderly were not accepted in hospitals, we lived through moments of great uncertainty and the majority of centers acted the best they knew how and could “, he defends.
He assures us that the relatives of the inmates “have given us all their trust. Every day video calls are made with them, they see their parents and grandparents, they know the work of the nurses, assistants, cleaners, cooks … of all the workers whom I also want to claim.
