Infected with black fungus, three children in India must lose their eyes

Jakarta

Case black mushroom or mucormycosis continues to spread and become a pandemic in India. Even now the cases have reached more than 10,000 amid the COVID-19 which is still high.

As is known, mucormycosis it can attack humans with weakened immune systems, including COVID-19 patients. This infection is also very risky in those who have uncontrolled diabetes.

As a result, a number of body parts such as eyes, teeth, and other tissues infected with this black fungus must be removed. This is an effective way to stop the black fungus infection from reaching the brain and causing death.

Not only in adults, doctors recently had to remove the eyes of three children in India who were infected with the black fungus associated with COVID-19.

The three children from Mumbai are aged 4, 6 and 14, respectively. The 14-year-old child is also known to have diabetes. Doctors said his eyes ‘blackened out’ within 48 hours.

“The fungus also spread to the nose. Fortunately, it did not reach the brain. We treated him for six weeks, but unfortunately he had to lose his eye,” said senior consultant pediatrician at Fortis Hospital, Dr Jesal Sheth, quoted from The Sun, Saturday (19/6/2021).

Meanwhile, two other children are being treated at the KBH Bachooali Mumbai Eye and ENT Hospital due to being infected with COVID-19. An ophthalmologist at the hospital, Dr Prithesh Shetty, said they were already blind in one eye.

“Black fungus is spreading in their eyes, and if we don’t lift their eyes, their lives are in danger. They are already blind in one eye and it hurts them a lot,” said Dr Shetty.

Apart from the three children, another 16 year old child was also infected black mushroom. The child is known to be infected with COVID-19 and has diabetes, which caused the inside of his stomach to become infected with black fungus.

“Previously, the 16-year-old had recovered from COVID-19 and did not have diabetes. But he came to us and suddenly had diabetes,” explains Dr Jesal Sheth.

“His intestines started to bleed. We did an angiography and found that the black fungus had infected a blood vessel near his stomach,” he concluded.
