**Sugiono** to Tackle 19 Meetings at ASEAN Summit

Indonesia champions regional stability at critical Kuala Lumpur gathering.

Foreign Minister **Sugiono** of Indonesia is preparing for an intensive schedule at the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) and Post Ministerial Conference (PMC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from July 8-11, 2025. He will engage in 19 key meetings, underscoring Indonesia’s commitment to Southeast Asian stability.

High-Level Engagement

**Sugiono**’s agenda includes the Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and a series of bilateral discussions with partner nations. These meetings offer a crucial platform for Indonesia to advocate for regional peace and economic cooperation.

According to **Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro**, Director General of ASEAN Cooperation at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia’s active role demonstrates a genuine dedication to maintaining regional peace, stability, and prosperity. He stated at a press conference on July 3, 2025, “It aligns with our national interest.”

Indonesia to Chair ASEAN-Australia Dialogue

During the AMM-PMC meetings, **Sugiono** is also expected to chair several sessions, including the ASEAN-Australia Ministerial Meeting. Indonesia currently serves as the ASEAN Coordinator for Australia, giving them a leading role in shaping discussions and collaborations.

Extensive Diplomatic Schedule

The Indonesian Foreign Minister will participate in meetings with key ASEAN partners such as China, the United States, Japan, Russia, South Korea, the European Union, and Australia. These interactions will cover a range of topics, from trade and security to climate change and human rights.

Conference Agenda

The meetings begin on July 8 with discussions between ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), along with a meeting concerning the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty.

The 58th AMM plenary and retreat sessions are slated for July 9, followed by the PMC and the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) gathering on July 10. The ARF and East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will conclude the forum on July 11.

Focus on Palestinian Development

Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEAN 2025, will also host the Conference on Cooperation Among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (SEAPAD), which **Sugiono** plans to attend. Additionally, Indonesia is scheduled to participate in the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC).

Maintaining ASEAN Centrality

**Sidharto** emphasized that this meeting is a vital opportunity for Southeast Asia to express its views on global developments. Indonesia’s participation aims to reinforce ASEAN’s central role in the face of complex international dynamics. Amid rising geopolitical tensions, maintaining ASEAN centrality is crucial for regional stability; in 2024, intra-ASEAN trade accounted for 22% of the region’s total trade, underscoring its economic importance (ASEAN.org).

**Sidharto** noted, “As it is known, there are significant dynamics in international political maneuvering.” **Sugiono** also intends to conduct bilateral meetings with several partner countries, with the schedules currently being finalized.

A total of 34 countries, including the 10 ASEAN member states and 24 partner countries, are expected to attend. The sessions will consist of plenary meetings, retreats, and separate bilateral discussions. The forum is anticipated to produce a joint communique from the ASEAN Foreign Ministers.
