Authorities in Indonesia are intensifying their efforts against online gambling, a crackdown that coincides with concerns about potential fraud within the nation’s social assistance programs. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, has urged the government to exercise caution when using data from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) to suspend welfare payments.She highlighted the possibility that individuals’ identities might be compromised and misused by criminals, potentially leading to the wrongful termination of benefits for legitimate recipients.
Maharani emphasized that criminals are employing sophisticated methods to exploit identities, including those of individuals receiving social assistance. This statement follows an announcement earlier this year by the Ministry of Social Affairs, which initiated a thorough review of over 32 million welfare payment recipients. The ministry expressed suspicion of widespread fraud, attributing its rise in part to the increasing popularity of online gambling.
In parallel with these concerns,the Indonesian national Police’s Criminal Examination Unit recently announced the dismantling of an international online gambling network. The operation targeted the Akasia899 and Tanjung899 gambling platforms, which reportedly had operational branches in China and Cambodia. Simultaneous raids were conducted in Bogor, Bekasi, Tangerang, and Denpasar, resulting in the arrest of 22 individuals. Investigators revealed that the operators of these sites utilized cryptocurrency transactions to launder their illicit profits.
The ongoing debate surrounding gambling in Indonesia has seen varied perspectives from politicians, religious leaders, and academics. Earlier this year, discussions emerged regarding the potential legalization of casinos as a means to generate new revenue streams for the country.
