“Indonesia Implements New Innovation with Wolbachia to Prevent Dengue Fever”

PEKALONGAN, KOMPAS.TV – Everyone in Indonesia is at risk of getting dengue fever and the average dengue fever attacks productive age. To prevent and eradicate mosquitoes that cause dengue, the Indonesian Ministry of Health has implemented a new innovation to prevent dengue with Wolbachia.

Wolbachia eggs are hatched and allowed to become Wolbachia mosquitoes which are expected to kill dengue mosquitoes that cause dengue. The city of Semarang itself has become a pilot for eradicating Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes with the dengue prevention method with Wolbachia which was launched directly by the Indonesian Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin with the Mayor of Semarang Hevearita Gunaryanti Rahayu in Tembalang District.

On that occasion the Indonesian Minister of Health hoped that this innovation would be successful in preventing dengue fever. DB is one of the high infectious diseases in Indonesia with a peak of 200 thousand and an average of 100 to 150 thousand cases a year. While the death rate is between 1000 and 1500. There are several cities with high rates such as Bandung, Jakarta, Semarang and Bontang. In Semarang, the highest number of DB sufferers is in the Tembalang area.
