In India, four men were hanged, who were a young woman in December 2012 raped and tortured in a moving van. They were executed in a prison in the capital New Delhi.
The perpetrators left the woman, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, dead by the side of the road. She had serious internal injuries and died two weeks later in a hospital in Singapore. She was taken there in an extreme effort to save her life.
Anger
The extreme violence turned India upside down. Never rape caused so much emotion in the country. Crowds of enraged Indians took to the streets to draw attention to the disadvantaged position of women. They demanded an end to the flow of violence against women and the perpetrators’ lack of criminal prosecution.
The mass protests resulted in a stricter anti-rape law. This made it possible to impose the death penalty on convicted rapists.
