Indians Angry, Cricket Millionaires Keep Competing in the Covid-19 Hotspot City

NEW DELHI, KOMPAS.com – Indians pouring out anger on social media over “strange” decision Indian Premier League (IPL) to continue playing at hotspot Covid-19 New Delhi.

Meanwhile, the Indian capital is being hit by a terrible new wave of Covid-19. The death toll is increasing and their health care system is on the brink of collapse.

Hundreds of people roam around the city desperately looking for hospital beds. Many have turned to traditional healers in an effort to escape the pandemic.

But stars Indian cricket from Jos Buttler, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah took to the field on Thursday (29/4/2021).

The Rajasthan Royals’ latest IPL match against the Mumbai Indians, took place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in central Delhi.

Indifferent league officials have continued the season despite the pandemic gripping the country.

Sharp criticism was aimed primarily at the match being directly opposite New Delhi’s largest Covid-19 hospital – LNJP.

It was only a few days ago that the facility reportedly had only 2 hours of oxygen left, and forced patients to share beds.

India’s Covid crisis is showing no signs of slowing down. The latest on Saturday (1/5/2021), Hindustan Times reported that more than 400,000 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the South Asian country in the last 24 hours.

An editor, writing for India’s digital news service Scroll.in, labeled the IPL as a “spectacle freak” this week.

Cricket players continue to live and work in their “biosecure” bubble, which is far removed from the reality of Covid-19 in India’s main city.

Pressure continues to mount on the cricket authorities to suspend this season. Many fans argue that stadiums should be used in the Covid-19 relief effort rather than for sport.

Thursday’s match saw Chris Morris and Sharma in action. Both are the highest paid IPL players with £ 1.6 million (Rp.31.9 billion) a year and £ 1.5 million (Rp.29.9 billion) a year, respectively.

A senior official of the Cricket Supervisory Board in India, however, insists the IPL provided much-needed assistance during the country’s toughest times.

“Maybe it’s more important now to hold an IPL, when there are so many negative things around,” the official said, as reported The Guardian.

“We must not underestimate the power of sport to spread positive things. At least fans have fun at home. If not, many of them will come out without masks. “

“The league makes a lot of money for the economy. It must be seen from that context too. How does stopping IPL help? “

India’s Covid death toll as a whole is now officially over 200,000 – the fourth highest in the world after the US, Brazil and Mexico. But investigations suggest the actual number of deaths could be double.

Daily Mail reported, it happened because the official figures only included those who died in hospital, who are currently overwhelmed. Meanwhile, countless patients who died at home or on the streets.

Overcrowded cities like Delhi and Mumbai are hotspots of infection. But now the virus has spread to more and more rural areas, wreaking further havoc.
