India: Tiger should be imprisoned for life after attacks

A tiger that is said to have killed three people in India has been captured. In addition, he should remain locked up for the rest of his life. This was announced by officials in the state of Madhya Pradesh at the weekend.

The male big cat is “too dangerous” to continue living in freedom. The five-year-old tiger has repeatedly attacked people and cattle.

The animal has been in a zoo in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, since Saturday. It is isolated there. The tiger is also called “vagabond” or “nomad” by the Indian media because a few years ago it had traveled the more than 500 kilometers from Maharashtra state to the Betul district in Madhya Pradesh.

After this long journey, the tiger had already been captured at the end of 2018 and kept in custody for two months. Then he was given a collar with a transmitter so that he could follow his paths before he was released again. The authorities had designated a tiger reserve and a national park as permanent abode for “vagabond”, but he kept straying out of these areas.

Permanent captivity as the “only option”

The tiger was given “multiple chances” to live in the wild again, but it has invaded people’s homes over and over again, said Madhya Pradesh, S.K. Mandal, the AFP news agency. Therefore, his permanent captivity is now “the only option”.

India is home to about 70 percent of the world’s existing tiger. According to the latest official figures, the tiger population in the country more than doubled between 2006 and 2018 – from 1411 to 2967.

However, the natural habitats of the big cats have shrunk considerably over the past decades due to the spread of humans, which repeatedly leads to fatal clashes between humans and tigers. According to official figures, almost 225 people were in between 2014 and 2019 India killed by tigers. Conversely, between 2012 and 2018, more than 200 tigers were killed by poachers or electrical wires.
