India is becoming the second country with more than 7 million people infected with the coronavirus

More than 74,000 new infections have been confirmed across the country in the past day, bringing the total to 7,053,806, the Ministry of Health said on Sunday.

During the day, the virus-induced disease Covid-19 claimed 918 lives and the total number of victims reached 108,334.

Since the Indian authorities began easing severe restrictions in late May, the virus has spread at an alarming rate.

The first case of Covid-19 in India was reported on January 30, and the total number of infections reached one million in mid-July. Since then, the spread of the virus has grown exponentially, with more than six million new cases in less than three months.

Recent trends show a slight decline, with an average of 70,000 cases per day over the last three weeks, compared to an average of 90,000 in the first two weeks of September, but India has seen the fastest daily increase in morbidity in the world.

Experts warn that the slowdown could be short-lived as winter approaches and Hindu holidays approach, and more and more people return to work.

If the disease continues to spread at the current rate, India could soon overtake the United States in terms of the number of infections, with 7.7 million cases detected so far.
