India Criticizes Canada for Allowing Khalistan Separatists’ Parade Depicting Indira Gandhi’s Assassination

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jayashankar criticized Canada for allowing Khalistan separatists to hold a parade depicting the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The parade was held in Brampton, Canada. The Times of India quoted Jaishankar as saying that such actions by Canada would not be good for bilateral relations with India.

He also asked why this is being done other than for vote bank politics.

“Frankly speaking, I don’t understand why this is necessary except for vote bank politics. There is a problem with giving space to violent people, separatists and terrorists. This is not good for relations with India,’ Hindustan Times quoted Jaishankar as saying.

Jaya Shankar’s reaction came after the video depicting Indira Gandhi’s assassination went viral on social media.

According to reports, supporters of Khalistan organized a parade on June 4. It was ahead of the 39th anniversary of Operation Bluestar.

The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has sent a letter to Global Affairs Canada expressing displeasure over the incident.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the filming of Indira Gandhi’s assassination was a worthless act. He also asked Jaya Shankar to look into the matter seriously.
Congress also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the incident as unfortunate.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Sreenath said that there was no significant response from the government in the incident. They also accused the government of only making a general statement without even mentioning Indira Gandhi’s name.
