Indian authorities have decided to ban 59 apps from Chinese companies. This is stated in a press release from the Indian Ministry of Information Technology on Monday afternoon.

The decision was made on the basis that the Indian authorities believe the apps carry on “activities that are detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity” of India, the country’s defense, state security and public order, the ministry said.

The list includes well-known apps such as the video service TikTok, the social media Weibo and Wechat, as well as several of the apps for the search engine giant Baidu.

The ministry says they have received “many complaints” about several apps “theft of data” and that these have been sent to servers outside India. In addition, the ministry has received recommendations from several state regulators to block the apps.

“On the basis of these and having received reliable input that such apps pose a threat to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the Government of India has decided not to allow the use of specific apps,” the Ministry of Information Technology writes in a press release.

– This action will safeguard the interests of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure the security and sovereignty of the Indian Internet, it further states.
