Index – Domestic – Salaries of civil servants are deplorable

The president of the Higher Education Workers’ Union (FDSZ) confirmed the news that appeared in a community post that a university assistant professor would receive only 190,000 forints a month.

192,506 HUF is what a university assistant professor earns in Hungary today, with a doctoral degree, continuous research and publication obligations

– wrote one of the assistant professors of Eötvös Loránd University these days.

Sándor Dráviczki, the president of FDSZ, informed the Index that a university teaching assistant who goes to a doctoral school, publishes and teaches is also earning a ridiculous amount, his income is less than 150 thousand forints, which means only 883 forints per hour.

This amount, with which you cannot even take out a loan, is humiliatingly deplorable.

At the same time, expectations are high for university teaching assistants; they go to doctoral schools, take language exams, do research, publish, and attend conferences.

The president of FDSZ added that for those working in higher education, the salary scale only sets minimum amounts, meaning that universities can pay a higher amount, but their economic situation does not allow it. Dráviczki mentioned the University of Nyíregyháza as an example, where they can also provide only the legal minimum amount for lecturers.

He also pointed out that a university professor, at the peak of his career, who has several academic degrees, can earn up to 368 thousand forints before his retirement, which is internationally recognized.

The government justifies the reason for the low salaries of lecturers with the economic situation of universities, which can be solved by the foundation transformation of state institutions. Gergely Gulyás, the minister in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office, stated in last week’s government information: on September 15 and January 1, there will be another 15 percent increase in state-funded universities, he added that in state universities as well.

Profession, even for free

However, there are even more surprising cases in higher education. In Miskolc and Pécs, more than 100 university lecturers work without any remuneration. According to FDSZ, this raises issues of concern from both labor law and ethics.

At the University of Miskolc, 31 people currently teach without consideration, ie free of charge, within the framework of a legal relationship, Transparent reported. Dr. Zsuzsanna Dabasi-Halász, associate professor and local leader of FDSZ, is also aware of the problem. In his opinion, if the employer expects the tasks to be performed without pay, the employee cannot be expected to perform his work to a high standard.

In addition to the University of Miskolc, only the University of Pécs provided information on the employment status of the lecturers and their salaries upon request to the Transparent. In its reply, the University of Pécs stated that there are currently more than 90 lecturers who perform their duties as social actors without remuneration.

Is it better worth it without studying?

However, another group of workers can earn up to five times that amount without a tertiary education. As we have already reported that, the hospitality industry is struggling with labor shortages. Every fifth job is vacant, so a Hungarian chef can ask for a net net of one million a month to go to work at Lake Balaton.

This is also confirmed by the latest CSO survey. According to their announcement, the average monthly gross earnings of full-time employees exceeded HUF 440,000 in April, said the Central Statistical Office (CSO). According to their calculations, the average gross earnings for January – April this year were HUF 425 thousand and the net average earnings were almost HUF 283 thousand, which represents an increase of 9.6 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Not a unique case

The situation is even more deplorable – according to the words of Péterné Boros. According to the president of the Trade Union of Hungarian Civil Servants, Civil Servants and Public Service Workers (MKKSZ), this situation is present not only in higher education, but also in higher education.

AFFECTS ALL THIRD EMPLOYEES WHO WORK IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE.

According to the union president, there are approximately 600,000 people working in this sector, who are driven primarily by vocation and in life, working without a vocation is impossible in this sphere. He stressed that the proportion of people with intellectual occupations is the highest here.

At the same time, more than a third receive a minimum wage, or a guaranteed minimum wage, whose only dream is to create a stable future for themselves.

Several pay classes are below the minimum wage, but at the same time the job is tied to a degree by law.

In his opinion, the civil servant table is devalued, and in addition, the current system of salary scales and allowances is opaque, as public service employees are paid on the basis of 28 different salary systems.

Mrs. Pétern Boros added that the MKKSZ, like other trade unions, proposes the establishment and application of the minimum wage, which can be a driving force.
