Mircea Diaconu spoke, at DC News, about the Youth monument from Straja, or “Winged”, a unique work in Europe which, unfortunately, is left to degrade instead of being transformed into a tourist objective.

Due to its significance, plasticity and its impressive dimensions (approx. 48 m high), the STRAJA YOUTH MONUMENT, or “WINGED”, inaugurated in 1988, located on the right bank of the Poarta Albă – Agigea Canal, in the area of the former Straja locality, on the current territory of Bărăganu commune, Constanța county, is a valuable contemporary monumental work of art, which deserves to be protected and valued. Mircea Diaconu spoke, at DC News, about this special monument.

“This monument is top notch. It’s like the Ninth Symphony, it’s somehow unfinished because it was never completed, inaugurated, never unveiled. But it exists and has already been vandalized … a thing of normalcy; already it is largely vandalized, some bronze bas-reliefs have disappeared, nobody really knows who took them, maybe they melted them …

The ensemble was made by Pavel Bucur. He was a very good friend of mine. We met when we were students, in 1969, in the fall of ’69. He was a visual artist, we were actors, theater people, and we did a show, we went to an experimental, sensational and top theater festival at that time, and he did the scenography for our show and we remained friends of a life. Unfortunately, he collapsed five years ago.

Going back to the monument, it’s a lucky thing, so to speak. It is a top monument – it is very clear – but as we neglect other heritage sites that are even historical, representative of our nation, we leave them in ruins as well. Something needs to be done.

Things are unclear. He was pushed at one point, completely in vain, to a youth foundation that has no power or interest of any kind. It must be reused, put in its place, because it is a figurative monument and made by a European level sculptor – and this is very clear – which is on the banks of the Danube Canal – the Black Sea and should – I know that from him, in time what he was working on, I know very well that we were talking – to be a monument that represents the sacrifice of so many people and so many generations for this channel, which the world mischievously charges as an achievement of communism and Ceausescu – a profoundly wrong thing , because projects are royal – to exist.

Many people died there. They died during the infernal oppression and died even after that. A whole host of young people died there while it was being made, and this monument must be assumed to be the symbol of the sacrifice of all the people who thought and worked and died for this canal to exist. And that, commercially speaking, should be a success. Channels, as a rule, in the world, bring money and well-being. I see it as a form of ‘Master Manole’ sacrifice. So many people have died for this to exist and it is a pity not to take it to the end and to use it, to assume it, that it exists “, Mircea Diaconu told DC News.
