View of the pedestrianized avenue (Villeurbanne town hall)
–
From this Monday, the portion between Cours Emile-Zola and Rue Anatole-France is permanently closed to vehicles.
The pedestrianization of the south of avenue Henri-Barbusse in Villeurbanne had already been tested in the summer of 2020. However, from this Monday, June 27, the portion between Cours Emile-Zola and Rue Anatole-France is definitively closed to vehicles. . The City wanted to widen the pedestrian zones in the city center and in particular at the Skyscrapers, to improve the quality of life in the city, calm traffic, make pedestrian movement safer and fight against car pollution.
This space gained from the car will therefore be fully returned to pedestrians, with the installation of additional benches and planters for a greener, more pleasant and more attractive avenue. The installation of benches, banquettes and lounge chairs along the entire avenue will take place on July 4th. As of July 18, 56 repainted planters along the entire avenue will be installed.
The City also indicates that many activities will be offered to residents as part of “Vivez l’été”, an event that will be launched on July 2. Throughout the day, second-hand goods dealers from the Puces du Canal will set up shop on the avenue to sell vinyl, toys, paintings, crockery… From 5 p.m., the Nuits de Fourvière arrive in Villeurbanne with workshops and juggling and a great light show at 10 p.m., where an aurora borealis will light up the sky above Place Lazare-Goujon.
From July 2 to August 27, activities (culture, sport, leisure, etc.) for everyone will be present in the city center and in each district of Villeurbanne.
Facilities
The City specifies that delivery vehicles will be able to access the avenue from Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to unload their goods in shops in the city center.
Initially, mobile barriers will be installed at the entrance to Cours Emile-Zola. The closing and opening of the barriers will be ensured by an agent. By the end of the year, retractable terminals will be installed on the side of Cours Emile-Zola and Rue Michel-Servet. The bollards will be kept low between 7 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Removals will be authorized at the same times. A parking permit is required https://www.villeurbanne.fr/demarches
