‘In Valencia you surf’. Culture and sport come together in the first Surf, Music and Friends in the city

VALENCIA, 31 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

‘En Valencia se surfea’ is the motto of the first edition in this city of the Surf, Music and Friends festival, which will be held from June 9 to 12. A poster with the best big wave surfers in the world, such as Jamie Mitchell, Iballa Ruano, Axi Muniain or the “up and coming” Ben Larg; ‘filmmakers’ of the stature of Vincent Kardasik or Michael Darrigade, and lifeguards from all over the world are some of the attractions of the event.

The presentation of the event took place this Tuesday with the presence of the deputy of Youth and Sports of the Diputación de Valencia, Andrés Campos; the Councilor for Sports of Valencia, Pilar Bernabé; the Valencian surfers Miguel Colomina and Mireia Cabañes; Carlos Alonso and Lola Caballero on behalf of the Waterman and

waterwoman; Joana Alonso Dal Monte, local brand manager for Mahou; and Carlos Meana Pérez and Lluís Salvador, co-directors of Surf, Music & Friends, informs the organization in a statement.

After eight editions in Salinas (Asturias), the event arrives in Valencia to “show the culture that exists around sliding sports”.

Among the planned activities, some of the best lifeguards in the world will attend one of the key sporting events of the festival, the ‘Waterman Challenge’.

Likewise, workshops, beach cleaning, gymkhanas, live shaping of boards at the moment (Live Shaping), a careful selection of food trucks, a Surf Market, Surf Films on a big screen, dissemination and education through the Aula del Mar and the participation of Outstanding scientists and doctors, such as Dr. Fernando de Rojas or the Australian ironwoman and protector of the oceans, Lizzie Wellborn, are featured on the program.

LIVE MUSIC

As for live music, which comes thanks to the sponsorship of Vibra Mahou, there are concerts and performances by Mr. Sánchez, Los Invaders, Calivvla or La Peluquera, among others.

During the presentation, the surfer Miguel Colomina commented that, although surfing in Valencia does not have the waves that there are in other places because “the Mediterranean is like that”, nowadays “surfing is practiced and a lot, there are many surfers both for the abundance of population, as well as because it is much more accessible, with an already rooted culture”. However, he has warned that “massification leads to surf culture not being known as it should be, and precisely events like this serve to make it known.”

For her part, Mireia Cabañes –member of the national adapted surfing team– has asserted that practicing surfing “saved her life.” “I couldn’t find anyone who surfed with a prosthesis, but I discovered a documentary that showed me that it was possible and then I looked for a school and now here we are, working hard to get to the Olympics and showing that anyone with functional diversity can surf”, has told.

This first edition of Surf, Music and Friends in the city of Turia is possible thanks to the collaboration of the Valencia Provincial Council together with the Valencia City Council through its Departments of Sports and Tourism and the participation of La Marina.

Singular Stays provides accommodation to official athletes and surfers, and other brands collaborate in their respective specialties such as Enjoy!, Carver, Vita, or Up Surfboards. The festival also has Three Knots Mag and Nautica Channel as media partners.
