In these countries, the coronavirus is still widespread NOW

In the Netherlands, the coronavirus outbreak seems to have passed its peak for some time and many measures have already been relaxed or reversed as of 1 July. However, there are still some countries worldwide where the virus is spreading rapidly. An overview of a number of countries that are currently severely affected.

United States is reversing easing

Worldwide, the limit of ten million confirmed infections with the COVID-19 virus was passed on Sunday. This is evident from figures from Johns Hopkins Univeristy. A quarter of them, over 2.5 million, were registered in the United States. The country has the most infections worldwide. So far, 125,539 people have died from the coronavirus in the US.

Earlier this week, an increase in the number of newly diagnosed corona infections per day was reported in sixteen states. Saturday saw a peak in the states of Florida, Georgia, Nevada and South Carolina. In Florida and Arizona, the number of infections also rose at a record rate.

Ten states have since started to reverse corruption measures after the country saw a large increase in the number of new infections. Relaxations were introduced in almost all states earlier this month.

Brazil fears second wave in urban areas

In Brazil, the coronavirus has also been detected in more than 1.3 million people. The virus has claimed 57,070 deaths to date. On Saturday, 1,109 deaths and 38,693 infections were added. In addition, there is a fear of a second wave in the urban areas, as society is starting up again there, while the corona virus is still spreading rapidly in the smaller villages.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been criticized for tackling virus. He strongly opposed the corona measures in his country, which is suffering economically from the crisis. According to Brazil’s central bank, the economy is set to shrink by 6.4 percent this year, and nearly five million people have lost their jobs in recent months. In total, 12.6 percent of the population is now unemployed.

India focuses on preventing deaths

India passed the 500,000 infections on Saturday. More than seventeen thousand confirmed infections were added that day. In the major cities, such as the capital New Delhi, the number of contamination cases is increasing rapidly. Temporary field hospitals are being built with the help of the army to relieve the pressure on the hospitals.

Experts advising the government of India expect the number of infections to continue to increase steadily. Mid-July, 770,000 to 925,000 infections are expected. According to the experts, the government should now focus in particular on preventing deaths and not on containing the spread of the virus.

Mexico still reports thousands of infections every day

Also in Mexico, the number of daily infections and deaths is still high. On Saturday, the country reported 4,410 new infections and 602 new deaths. The day before, this involved 5,441 infections and 719 deaths. In total, Mexico now has 212,806 confirmed infections and 26,381 deaths.

On Thursday, the country started conducting contact investigations. This happened after Mexican Finance Minister Arturo Herrera tested positive.

Critics say Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador did not take the virus seriously enough and set a bad example for not wearing a face mask in public. The President and Minister of Finance were photographed together last week.

South Africa eases measures, despite a large increase in contamination numbers

In South Africa, casinos and cinemas are open again on Monday. People are also allowed to eat in restaurants again. Earlier this month, several other relaxation of the corona measures also took place.

While society in South Africa is slowly getting going again, the number of infections is increasing. On Thursday, 6,500 new infections were reported, while the number of daily infections in April was less than a thousand. In total, there are now 118,375 confirmed infections and 2,292 deaths.

The reason that relaxation is still taking place is that the tourism sector, which South Africa is largely dependent on, is suffering greatly from the corona measures. Many companies are in danger of closing.
