In the middle of the lockdown, TUMO Berlin successfully goes online

  • Teens learn animation, programming, robotics, and more
  • First free extracurricular offer of its kind
  • After Yerevan and Paris for the first time in Germany
  • 130 young people connected online on the first day
  • Interest in other TUMO centers in Germany is growing

During the soft lockdown, KfW Bankengruppe opens the first digital TUMO learning center in Germany. In accordance with the pandemic, the operation starts in virtual form and can be switched to face-to-face operation at any time if the situation improves: 130 young people – almost half of them girls – successfully switched on from home on the first day and got to know their coaches. TUMO Berlin is a free offer for young people between the ages of 12 and 18. Once operations have started up, more than 1,000 young people per week can learn digital and creative technologies such as 3D modeling, robotics, programming, but also film, music and photography in the TUMO center. KfW Bankengruppe is financing the center in Berlin Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf for the first five years. The project is supported by the Federal Chancellery.

Minister of State Dr. Hendrik Hoppenstedt: “I am very pleased that the first TUMO center for digital education in Germany is opening in Berlin. In the field of digital media, TUMO is bringing an educational offering to Germany that can open up a new world of experience for young people. The opening of the center also strengthens the relationship between Germany and Armenia, the mother country of the TUMO concept. With the support of KfW, the TUMO center in Berlin is being presented as a model of an educational institution that is sure to meet with great interest beyond Berlin. “

Dr. Ingrid Hengster, board member of KfW Bankengruppe: “In the midst of the Corona crisis, we are sending a message with TUMO Berlin: Digital education is extremely important and no longer a vision of the future – it takes place here and now. The first TUMO learning center in Germany is about to start digitally and, on the one hand, offers a unique opportunity to learn digital skills that will open up future career opportunities. In addition, this creates a modern leisure offer at a time when public life in Germany is at a standstill. It is a bright spot in these challenging times and I am proud of this initiative. “

TUMO is an innovative educational learning concept from Armenia that has already established itself internationally. There are TUMO centers in Paris, Beirut, Tirana and Moscow, among others. A total of 19,000 young people have been reached so far. KfW has concluded a franchise agreement with TUMO Armenia. Dorothee Bär, Minister of State at the Federal Chancellery for Digitization, was present at the signing ceremony in January 2020.

The TUMO Learning Center Berlin is located at Wilmersdorfer Str. 59 and is a highly modern center on four floors with various workshop rooms, a robotics room, an auditorium, a music studio, an open learning area and a lounge. The center is intended to encourage people to follow suit, and promising discussions about the implementation of further centers in Germany have already taken place.

On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, KfW promotes education in Germany with the student and education loan and the advancement BAföG. As a federal and state development bank, it also accompanies the digital transformation process in Germany with various promotional offers for companies and municipalities.
