356 America Roadster, the pioneer

In 1952, Porsche slowly set out to conquer America with the 356 America Roadster. Behind this model, we find a well-known man, Max Hoffman, importer of exotic European vehicles in the United States, of Austrian origin, settled on the new continent during the Second World War to flee the hunt for the Jews. Max Hoffman meets Ferry Porsche at the Paris Motor Show in September 1950 and requests exclusivity on the import of Porsches across the Atlantic. Faced with the success of the imports, Hoffmann won the trust of Porsche and requested the development of a version for the United States, accessible but also discovered to seduce in California or Florida.

The Porsche 356 America Roadster is thus developed with an all-aluminum body with an original design and a 70 horsepower engine. The equipment of this vehicle has been reduced to the essentials. It was powered by a 1480 cc four-cylinder boxer engine rated at 51 kW (70 hp). A significant leap from previous models with a smaller engine with only 29 kW (40 hp). Produced in only sixteen units, the 356 America Roadster laid the groundwork for the 356 Speedster which would be released in 1954.

A model with small onions

To mark the 70th anniversary of the 356 America Roadster, Porsche is presenting a special model of the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS that continues the tradition of an open sports car designed specifically for the North American market. The new model – presented during the 2022 Porsche Parade in Poconos (Pennsylvania) – is based on the 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet with a 7-speed manual transmission.

The heart of the new 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine developing 480 hp with a torque of 570 Nm. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) Sport is standard on board. The sports exhaust system and the Sport Chrono package are also standard equipment, while rear axle steering and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are optionally available at an additional cost. Standard steel brake discs on the front wheels with six-piston aluminum fixed calipers measure 408mm.

Porsche Exclusive Manufactory propose an “azure blue 356” shade, inspired by the 1953 356 America Roadster and exclusive to this special vehicle. RS Spyder design wheels with a special finish are white inside the spokes and silver outside including stripes in Guards Red along the edge of the rim. “America” is emblazoned on the doors in white lettering with accents in Guards Red.

The color scheme continues inside, including along the upper dash and door panels. The armrest of the center console has a two-tone embroidery in Indian red and pebble gray, the leather is embossed with the lettering “America”. Illuminated door sill guards are also standard. An optional extended interior package provides further color accents in protective red and white, for example on the steering wheel, gear knob and seats.
