The Dnipropetrovsk Regional Administrative Court canceled the regional status of the Russian language in the region, fully satisfying the petition of the regional prosecutor’s office. The solution was accepted Wednesday, 25 August.
According to the court ruling, the decision of the Dnepropetrovsk Regional Council to support the language policy in Ukraine, according to which the regional status of the Russian language was preserved, is recognized as illegal. The court decided that this contradicts the current law on the state language.
The decision will enter into force after the deadline for filing an appeal by all participants in the case expires.
The regional status of the Russian language was introduced according to the so-called Kivalov-Kolesnichenko language law, now recognized as unconstitutional.
