In parts of Switzerland, up to half a meter of snow falls

(sda) On the central and eastern Alps, it snowed almost without interruption from Sunday evening, as SRF Meteo announced on Monday. 49 centimeters of snow fell on the animal feud in the canton of Glarus, which is only around 800 meters above sea level. On the Stoos SZ it was 45 centimeters and in Engelberg OW 38 centimeters.

The amount of snow was lower in the inner alpine region. In Ulrichen, in Goms, 20 centimeters of fresh snow was measured, in Disentis GR 19 centimeters. In Davos, however, only 2 centimeters of fresh snow fell.

Especially in the eastern Central Plateau, there was snow on Monday morning even in deep areas, for example in Pfäffikon ZH with 15 centimeters or in Beromünster LU with 8 centimeters. Further to the west, but also along the Upper Rhine, it remained mostly green for the time being. In the lowlands there was between 0 and 5 centimeters of fresh snow on Monday morning.

Occasionally there were traffic delays on Monday. In the city of Zurich, trams and buses only ran to a limited extent or were completely stopped on Monday due to the slippery snowfall. Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ) advised passengers to use the S-Bahn if possible.

As SRF Meteo further reported, there was initially a considerable risk of avalanches in the northern Alps from the eastern Bernese Oberland to the Glarus Alps (level 3). The avalanche danger on the southern side of the Alps from the Maggia valley via the Misox to the Puschlav was also significant. According to the Snow and Avalanche Research Institute (SLF), danger level 2, i.e. moderate, applied to the rest of the Alpine region.

Together with the snowdrifts, there was sometimes very large amounts of snow in the high mountains. 93 centimeters of fresh snow was measured on Ortstock / GL.

According to the weather service MeteoNews, occasional snow showers should pass through the flatlands on Monday, but the dry phases should be longer. Along the Alps, where the cold, damp air accumulates, it is likely to keep snowing for a long time as the intensities decrease.
