Nantes has a public space agency. Start this Monday, September 9 for this new service with about forty agents in the field. With the intent, for example, unusual parking or illegal dumping. There is no specific recruitment for this new unit. This includes the reinstatement of ASVP, public highway inspection agents.
Until recently, these agents checked whether or not you had paid to park your vehicle. A mission that represented “80% of their working time” according to Bassem Asseh, deputy security. Since the beginning of the month, three radar cars have taken over. These cars go through the streets and automatically fine those who have not put money in the parking meter.
New missions for those old ASVPs
So, time is freed up for those forty little agents who go in different areas of Nantes from Monday to Saturday, from 8am to 8pm. It will be until 6pm from mid-October to mid-March. In uniform, they will travel on foot, by bicycle or by public transport.
You can ask them to park inconveniently: the car parked on the pavement for example or even on the bike path. They also monitor illegal dumping of waste, find the person responsible and clean it up. They can also intervene in case of noise pollution. “Minor” crimes that can sometimes be dismissed. So they must be solved as soon as possible, according to the mayor of Nantes. “It is a human presence that provides reassurance, advice and prevents the situation from getting worse”specifies Johanna Rolland.
New town police officers were hopeful
As a result, this will free up time for municipal police officers. We know the subject is sensitive: Nantes, like other cities, has a problem recruiting. So the public space agency will take over missions previously managed by the municipal police. The latter should in principle have more time for theft, fighting, for example.
No additional mission, points out the security assistant, remembering that everyone’s missions are managed. But explains Bassem Asseh, whether it is municipal police or the new public space group, these services work in conjunction with the national police.
All this is the result of a contract that was completed more than three years ago between the city and the State. Creation of 70 national police posts while increasing the number of municipal police. 235 agents in principle at the end of the mandate, in 2026. Of the 185 planned today, only 142 positions have been filled.
The town hall says that it is counting on interviews in the future and especially the national competition that it is currently organizing. Human resources as well as the use of video surveillance cameras, remembering the warden. “Security is my priority,” Johanna Rolland affirms, specifying that by the end of the year, there will be 330 cameras, compared to none when she began her mandate as mayor ten years ago . This new brigade can be reached by phone at 02.40.41.99.99.
