In Mexico, higher fatality among those infected with Covid-19: study

Mexico was placed as the country with the highest fatality due to Covid-19 among the 20 nations most affected by the pandemic in the world, according to an analysis by Johns Hopkins University, in the United States.

According to the educational center that tracks the progress of the epidemic worldwide, until yesterday, in Mexico, for every 100 infected with coronavirus there were 8.6 deaths on average.

This indicator placed the country as the one with the highest lethality compared to the other 19 nations most affected by the pandemic, and which according to Hopkins are: Peru (3.6 deaths per 100 infections); Italy (3.5); South Africa (3.1); United Kingdom (2.8); and Indonesia (2.7).

As well as Germany (2.7); Colombia (2.6); Canada (2.6); Poland (2.5); Argentina (2.5); Brazil (2.4); France (2.3); Spain (2.1); Ukraine (1.9); Russia (1.9); Portugal (1.8); United States (1.7); Czech Republic (1.7); and Turkey (1.1).

Regarding the mortality rate —that is, the number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in general—, Mexico was ranked number seven among the 20 most affected nations, with an indicator of 131.71.

Above the country was the United Kingdom, with a rate of 169.47 deaths due to Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants; followed by the Czech Republic (162.20); Italy (151.04); United States (141.65); Portugal (137.70); and Peru (132.26).

Below Mexico were Spain (131.38); France (118.10); Colombia (112.78); Brazil (110.53); Argentina (110.51); Poland (102.92); South Africa (80.11); Germany (74.41); Canada (56.02); Ukraine (55.64); Russia (52.21); Turkey (32.55); and Indonesia (11.79).

Deaths in municipalities

With a cut until last Sunday, February 7, in eight out of 10 municipalities in the country there had been deaths due to Covid-19.

According to the monitoring carried out by the federal Ministry of Health (SSA) on deaths at the municipal level, of the 2,457 localities with records, in 1,993 (81.1%) there had been at least one death due to the coronavirus, while in 464 there were no data on deaths.

The information from the federal agency indicates that the municipalities with the highest number of deaths from the SARS-CoV-2 virus, up to the aforementioned cut-off date, are Iztapalapa, in CDMX (4,497).

It was followed by Puebla, Puebla (3,968); Gustavo A. Madero (3,815), CDMX; Ecatepec, in the State of Mexico (3,723); and Guadalajara, Jalisco (3,485).

In the case of Iztapalapa, it should be noted that in January the day with the highest number of deaths due to Covid occurred: January 19, with 40 deaths. This meant that on average there were 1.6 deaths every hour that day.

In general, 14 municipalities grouped 41,975 deaths due to the virus until last Sunday, equivalent to 25.2% of the 166,200 confirmed deaths until the same cutoff day.

These municipalities are Monterrey, Nuevo León; Mexicali, Baja California; Tijuana Baja California; Juárez, Chihuahua; Leon, Guanajuato; Guadalajara Jalisco; as well as Gustavo A. Madero, Iztapalapa and Álvaro Obregón, in Mexico City.

In addition to Nezahualcóyotl and Ecatepec, in the State of Mexico; Puebla, Puebla; Querétaro, Querétaro; and San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí.
