In Kuldiga, restorers help residents to renovate the windows of the Old Town on their own / Article / LSM.lv

In order to educate the population about the importance of cultural and historical heritage and its restoration, as well as to help take care of this heritage, Kuldīga has several support programs. One of them is the campaign “Regular window maintenance”. It is an opportunity to arrange the windows of your property free of charge, investing your work and time. This is also an important step in the old town of Kuldiga towards the UNESCO World Heritage List. –

On the day when “Skrundas TV” visits the Kuldīga Restoration Center, Everita Rudene from Kuldīga is already doing the final work by the window of her apartment. She lives in the Old Town and is participating in the “Regular window maintenance” campaign for the third year in a row, gradually renovating all the windows.

Everita’s window was transformed into structural units, it needed a bit of prosthetics, it was glazed and painted according to ancient methods. Everita emphasizes that during these years, when she uses the opportunity to restore the windows under the supervision of masters, her perception of the preservation, restoration of the ancient and how to do it has also changed.

“More about guts, linseed oil and those things. Everything is more natural and breathable. I also painted the walls of the apartment with lime paint. The feeling that it is needed, ”says Everita.

Kuldīdzniece Everita Rudene renovates her home window, August 2020.

“What people do not do in this campaign is carpentry repair, where wood prosthetics take place, there must be specific skills. This is done by the employees of the restoration center, ”says restorer consultant Jānis Mertens.

In the campaign, the municipality provides the necessary materials, premises and the presence of masters, while residents invest their work and time in renovating their windows. This campaign is taking place in Kuldiga for the ninth time since 2010. The idea is intended for the Finnish Old Town of Rauma, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For this campaign, those windows are selected that are not very damaged and can be restored by the residents on their own.

“We pay more attention to window dates when surveying. If the original, then we save. It is an authentic substance that will pass this information on to future generations, ”says Mertens.

This year, more than 20 people participate in the program. Considering the drying time and methodology of linseed oil and each coat of paint, the work lasts a month and a half and requires operation 1-2 times a week.

“I do not know what I would do if I did not [šādas akcijas]. Probably the windows would stand that way, I wouldn’t make new ones, it costs very expensive, ”says Everita Rudene from Kuldīga.

Currently, the interest of the population in this campaign is very high. It even seems unbelievable that it didn’t get any response in the first year.

In nine years, about 400 window sets have been refurbished in this program.
