Flash flooding has left at least eight people dead in New York City and wreaked havoc in the economic and cultural capital of the United States where a state of emergency was declared overnight.

Streets, avenues, expressways were suddenly transformed into torrents, both in Brooklyn, in the borough of Queens and in Westchester County, north of the city.

The gigantic New York subway system is at a standstill, after many stations flooded and an all-time record for rain was set in Central Park. In total, 80 millimeters of rain fell in one hour.

The state of New Jersey was also hit hard by torrential rains and Governor Phil Murphy also declared a state of emergency there.
