In France, car thefts down sharply

This is one of the good news for 2020: the number of vehicle thefts has fallen sharply, from 137,700 thefts of cars and motorized two-wheelers in 2019 to 117,700 last year, a decrease by 13%. The reduction in the number of trips, the two lockdowns and curfews largely explain this trend, even if, in 2019, the number of thefts had already decreased by 4% compared to 2018.

An increase of 15.5% in Mayenne

However, this drop conceals regional or geographic disparities. Unsurprisingly, in large cities, vehicles are three more stolen than in rural areas. Loire-Atlantique, the western department where the number of vehicle thefts is the highest (3,737 declared in 2020), is in line with the national average, with a drop of 13.7% last year.

In Caen (Calvados), this decrease is even more pronounced (-18.5% with 627 flights). On the other hand, without there being any advanced explanation, Mayenne is one of the departments having recorded one of the strongest increases (+ 15.5%, but with 216 stolen vehicles in total).

The DS7 Crossback on your mind

According to the Ministry of the Interior, between 2011 and 2018, “More than half of the households (54%) whose car was stolen end up finding it against 39% for the households victims of a theft of two-wheeled motor vehicles”.

In its latest issue, Auto Plus delivers the list of the most stolen vehicles in France. At the head, and it’s a surprise for the magazine, comes the DS7 Crossback (194 thefts for 10,000 insured cars), even if this rate must be put into perspective, its sales being less numerous. It is followed by the Renault Megane RS (179) and the Renault Clio 4 (82).
